The Legacy

On Friday evening, July 14th, 2006 the Giro di Burnaby, an event born from the idea of Burnaby city councilor Pietro Calendino, made its debut on the streets of the Burnaby Heights Neighbourhood. The event, named as a tribute to Burnaby’s Italian community and to the world famous Giro d’Italia (the second largest and richest cycling race in the world) saw 63 men and 24 women finishing the inaugural race to a cheering crowd of approximately 7,000 spectators. Within three years, the Giro di Burnaby had grown to a full field of cycling professionals racing for a prize purse of over $15,000 in front of a spectator crowd of over 10,000.

The success of the Giro di Burnaby was due to in large part to the incredible support of our sponsors.

Il Girolino - A New Sponsorship Opportunity

We also recognized that it was exactly in difficult times that we need community events that are exciting but affordable, and so with great pleasure, the City of Burnaby and the Giro di Burnaby organizing team are very proud to present “Il Girolino di Burnaby” (The “Little” Giro).

This cycling event is a “Dash & Pedal” event for young people 5 – 12 years old and will be held as part of the Burnaby Heights “Hats Off Day” celebrations on Saturday, June 6th, 2009. Kid's will dash for their bikes then head out on a safely monitored bike course on Hastings Street all in the presence of a cheering, festive crowd.

Just Like the Giro
We will make sure that this fun, all-inclusive young people’s event will have the same flavour as the big people’s event (The Giro di Burnaby) with a fenced course, colorful banners, race commentator and medals for all participants. The focus is on participation only and increasing the awareness of the sport of cycling among our young people and within our community.
